Three Things You Never Say To Clients

Ever open your mouth and your foot falls out?

When working with your interior design clients, there are times when you need to speak up about certain things and other times when it’s best to stay quiet & say nothing at all.

Ever open your mouth and your foot falls out?

When working with your interior design clients, there are times when you need to speak up about certain things and other times when it’s best to stay quiet & say nothing at all.

I’m not suggesting you lie, that should’ve been #4 on my list!

Please, never lie.

However, this doesn’t mean that you must always share the full story or all the ‘behind the scenes’ moments of a decorating or renovation project.

As an interior design professional, some things are on a ‘need to know’ basis. This holds true for almost any industry.

Unfortunately, I’ve put my foot in my mouth a few times, so I’m speaking from experience when I share these tips with you.  The key is knowing when to draw attention to something and knowing when to keep your mouth shut.

To see what three things I suggest you should never say to clients, click the video below. (and be sure to stay to the end to catch my bloopers!)

Has there ever been a time that you should have bitten your tongue, but didn’t?

Managing clients expectations is something I feel very strongly about, I believe that this is one element that is absolutely key to a successful working relationship.  So that’s where Tip#1 comes in handy.

Keeping  personal thoughts to a minimum at the initial consultation, is demonstrated in Tip#2. (this is one where I opened my big gob and then thought “Doh!”).

And although you may be a perfectionist, every now and again you need to evaluate the importance of certain situations & elements of a design project.

For Tip#3, I share with you what I think needs to be highlighted on a project and when it is acceptable to keep quiet.

The business of interior design isn’t easy, but it can be very rewarding in many different ways.  We are human afterall, making mistakes is part of life.

The most important thing is that we learn from our mistakes.

As much of a cliche as that statement is, I put it there because it’s true.
