Is Agreeable Gray the Most Popular Neutral?

Agreeable Gray, SW 7029, by Sherwin Williams is one of the most popular neutral colours out there now for Interior Design and Decor.

While I haven’t had a project professionally photographed with this paint colour yet, I have specified it a fair amount to homeowners in my local area of Burlington and Oakville Ontario.

I have agreeable gray in my living room. At first I thought it was a huge mistake as my room has a lot of light and the color was lighter than I had hoped. In the end, both my husband and I live the color. It’s a neutral color that is also calming. I highly recommend!!

If I have Agreeable Gray paint on walls and white kitchen cabinets, do think Pure White or Alabaster trim and pantry door color would pair better? Thank you.

I have completed a home renovation and used Agreeable Gray for the living areas, some of which open to a large kitchen kitchen. In the breakfast room I used Dovetail. It pickups up the undertones in the Agreeable Beautifully, All the the trim and kitchen cabinets are Benjamin Moore White Dove and the Island is Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain which in the kitchen area pulls the warm undertones. I always test paint colors because of the variables in lighting and this combination has turned out beautifully. Note: Benjamin Moore paint can not always be matched well by SW, I always purchase paint from the original source.
Thank you for your Blog, They are well thought out and helpful when I am looking for color information and inspiration for my client projects.

Myra, thank you so much for sharing details of your project. I am happy that my blog has helped you! I also 100% agree about what you said about colour matching. I ALWAYS recommended clients go to the original source for paint and not try to colour match. Although it can be done, for the sake of saving some money, the risk is not worth it in my opinion.

Agreeable gray has a purple undertone in my north facing room. I hate it.

Sorry to hear that you don’t like the colour you painted your room. This is the very reason why I recommend painting a large sample board and moving around the room at different times of the day before finalizing a decision on paint. Thanks for sharing your feedback.

I use Agreeable Gray in all of our rental properties, it keeps things simple to use the same color. We are now getting ready to redo a flip house and I had planned on using Agreeable Gray throughout but need the right color of white for baseboards, crown molding, built in book cases and kitchen cabinets. Someone suggested Edgecomb Gray but I’m not sure if it would be the best gray a flip project. Would you suggest painting the three bedrooms and two bathrooms different colors or keeping things simple? Is pure white TOO white for cabinets and trim?

    • Claire Jefford
      | 9 March 2020

Edgecomb gray is not white and while I love it, I don’t think I would recommend it for trim on a flip either. I provide 3 white trim suggestions in this post. I also have my Essential Colour guides which includes 10 more colours you can pair with Agreeable Gray. You may find that helpful. I used Agreeable Gray in my livingroom, dining room, and playroom. My kitchen is also agreeable gray, but I’m changing the wall color and using extra white on the uppers and naval on the lowers with butcher block counters. I can’t wait to see the end results!

We used Agreeable gray throughout, but it is reading a little too pale blue. Any suggestions for balancing the color. We can’t repaint.

      | 23 April 2020

Hi Janis. Agreeable Gray is a Green Gray, so it’s odd that it’s looking blue in the space. I wonder if you had it colour matched elsewhere and not used Sherwin Williams paint?

Hello! I recently painted my entire house Aggreable Gray. The crown molding, trim, and cabinets are all Dover White. In some lights/at some points during the day, all I see is violet (and to be honest, it makes me cringe!) Is this normal for such a versatile color? Is there anything I can do? Thanks!

Agreeable Gray has a green undertone, so I wonder why you are seeing purple. Perhaps it has something to do with other elements in your space?

Hello! Remodeling the kitchen and installing painted cabinets in Agreeable Gray. What color would you suggest for the walls? Would ‘Anew gray’ or ‘mega greige’ work? Any others to consider? The kitchen will share a wall with the living room, so I would like to keep it more neutral.

      | 16 July 2021

Hi Renee. Anew Gray and Agreeable Gray make a lovely colour combination. Of course there are hundreds more you could consider, but look at this first if you like this colour and haven’t already done your remodel (just seeing some blog comments now!).

I am considering kitchen cabinets in Agreeable gray and possibly using it for trim and moldings as well. I am torn between using Alabaster or Pure White for wall color. I do not want yellow walls, but I also do not want a cold/stark look. What would you recommend? My kitchen will face east, but the light will come in from windows on the north side of the house.

      | 14 October 2021

Hi Hayley. Agreeable Gray looks lovely with Pure White. But Pure White is anything BUT pure white. It is more creamy so it may look yellow no matter what. I haven’t used that colour before and I don’t have my Alabaster paint board just now to look at that one. Maybe you want to look at an alternative like Extra White by Sherwin Williams instead. See how that looks with other fixed elements (counter, tile, backsplash) in your home.

    Hi,
I’m considering Alabaster White for the main exterior color, would Agreeable Gray be a good choice for the trim? I’m looking for a very subtle look.

    Thanks!

      | 5 December 2021

Hello Irene! I believe there would look lovely together, even though I do not have my boards on me at the moment to confirm. Just be sure that the colours you choose work well with brick, siding and any other fixed elements on the exterior of your home before committing.

    Hello,
I am looking for suggestions for an accent wall to go with Agreeable Gray. I was thinking Naval (SW) but worry that it may be too dark. I’d appreciate your expert opinion

    • Claire Jefford
      | 7 November 2021

Hello Lavern. Yes, Naval would work beautifully with Agreeable Gray. In fact, this is one of two blue tones I recommend in my Essential Colour Guide download. It really depends on what else you have going into the space that would complement those other furnishings. Here is a link to the guide if you are interested. https://clairejefford.com/product/agreeable-gray/

Hi, I am redoing bathroom. I would like walls silver strand but baffled for a vanity color as it has a almond and white marble top. Would Fawn Brindle work on the vanity and cabinet. I’m a bit tired of the dark brown cabinets I have in kitchen and other bathroom.

    • Claire Jefford
      | 5 December 2021

Hello Linda. You must be careful in using gray paint if it relates to nothing in your space. You need to be guided by the tones in your counter top and other tile in your bathroom. If you paint a cool gray on the walls and your fixed elements are all warm, it won’t look right. Hi. I am planning on painting our area above the garage and wanted to use Agreeable gray in the living room ( with Naval accent) and thinking of Sea Salt for the adjoins bedroom. I’m not sure what to paint the bathroom? The mirror and vanity are a darker wood with black granite counter. Wasn’t sure if Agreeable gray with an accent color or going with a different color? Do you have any recommendations for a bathroom color that would mesh well with those colors or if Agreeable gray alone would be ok? Was possibly thinking Fawn Brindle. Thank you so much.

    • Claire Jefford
      | 22 September 2023

Hi Jennifer. I would either consider reusing Naval for a bold, dramatic effect or go with a fun wallpaper! We use wallpaper in a lot of powder rooms and even used a fun, whimsical pattern for my own bathroom. You can see how I pulled that design together here –> https://clairejefford.com/small-bathroom-makeover/
